How to Play Successfully as Terran in Starcraft: Brood War

Starcraft is a keystone game in the RTS genre. It's timeless story and characters have transcended their original time periods and graphics to become gaming legends in their own right.

Some of the main characters in the StarCraft storyline are the humans, otherwise known as the Terran. The Terran are made up of one main Confederacy, and in the game the rebellion group the Sons of Korhal is taken to center stage with the overthrowing of the Confederacy and the crowning of Emperor Arcturus Mengsk.

The Terran, in gameplay style, are the 'middle of the road' species, between the fast and weaker Zerg and the slow and powerful Protoss. The Terran offer a unique gameplay experience with many distinct units and buildings. One of the first (and most useful) is the Marine, the main attack unit for the Terran forces.

1. The Marine

The Marine will most likely be your primary ground unit for most of the game. In the early game, the Terran player will have a distinct advantage in the Marine's ability to attack air units, something that the initial attack units of the Zerg and Protoss lack. This means that the Terran will always have an air defense to fall back on in the case of an aerial invasion.

2. The Bunker

The Terran have a unique building that will help their expansion as well: the Bunker. This building can house up to 4 gun-toting ground units (The Marine, the Ghost, or the Firebat), and offers a defense boost for the Terran defense line or as an outpost in the wilds of the map. Placing a SCV inside the bunker to pop out and repair the building will considerably boost its staying power as well. The combination of different units within the Bunker will also help it, creating a different attack style. Keep in mind that the Firebat, even when housed in the Bunker, cannot attack air units. It's often a good idea to build a Missle Turret next to the Bunker, for added air defense. For even more attack power, put a Siege Tank in Siege Mode next to the Bunker.

3. The Powerhouses

The most powerful units in the game belong to the Terran forces, but is unlikely they will show themselves in a quick game. The Siege Tank and the Battlecruiser are the longest firing and most damage dealing units in StarCraft, respectively. Used in conjunction, they are nearly unstoppable, but they have weaknesses alone. The Siege Tank has a minimum firing range when in Siege Mode, that allows fast units to sneak under its radar and attack, while the Battlecruiser is slow and bulky, an easy target if alone.
